FAQ

Is there a pass or fail in IELTS?

No. IELTS does not have a pass or fail system. You receive a band score from 0 to 9, and different institutions or immigration bodies set their own score requirements.

Can I take the IELTS test online from home?

Yes, there is an option called IELTS Online (Academic only), available in some countries. However, most official IELTS tests must still be taken at an approved test centre.

What ID is required on the test day?

You must carry the same valid ID (usually a passport) that you used to book the test. Without it, you won't be allowed to take the exam.

Can I wear a watch during the IELTS exam?

No, personal watches are not allowed. Every test room has a wall clock visible to all candidates.

Can I choose between British and American English?

Yes, IELTS accepts both British and American English in spelling, grammar, and pronunciation — but be consistent throughout your writing.

Is grammar important in IELTS Speaking and Writing?

Absolutely! Grammar plays a key role in scoring well in both Speaking and Writing. Errors can affect your fluency, coherence, and accuracy.

Do I get extra time to transfer answers in Computer-Based IELTS?

No. In computer-based IELTS, there is no extra transfer time — you enter answers directly during the Listening and Reading sections.

Can I ask the examiner to repeat a question in the Speaking test?

Yes, you can politely ask the examiner to repeat or clarify the question once. But you can’t ask them to explain or define it.

What happens if I miss my test date?

If you miss your test without prior notice, it will be considered a no-show and you won’t get a refund. However, in case of emergencies, you may apply for a reschedule with valid proof.

Can I write in capital letters in the Listening and Reading tests?

Yes! You can write all your answers in capital letters — it’s allowed and often recommended to avoid handwriting confusion.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Writing?

Academic Writing: Focuses on describing data (graphs, charts) and discussing a topic in an essay.
General Training Writing: Involves writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) and an essay on a general topic.

What should I bring to the IELTS test?

• Your valid ID (usually passport).
Pens, pencils, and erasers (if required for the paper-based test).
No electronic devices, bags, or personal items are allowed in the exam room.

Can I take breaks during the IELTS exam?

No. You can’t take breaks during the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections. However, during the Speaking test, if needed, a short break may be allowed depending on the circumstances.

How often can I take the IELTS exam?

There is no limit. You can take the test as many times as you like.

Can I take the Speaking test on a different day?

No. In most cases, the Speaking test is scheduled on the same day as the rest of your test. However, it can be scheduled up to 7 days before or after the main test, depending on the availability at your test center.

Can I use a dictionary during the IELTS exam?

No, dictionaries are not allowed in any part of the IELTS test. You must rely on your own knowledge and understanding of the English language.

What is the minimum IELTS score required for a student visa?

The required IELTS score for a student visa varies by country and institution. For example, in the UK, the minimum score is often 6.0 to 6.5, while in Canada, it may range from 6.0 to 7.0 depending on the program.

Can I request a re-evaluation of my IELTS score?

Yes, if you're not satisfied with your score, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR). It costs a fee, and your scores will be re-evaluated by senior examiners.

Can I use my IELTS score for work or migration purposes?

Yes! IELTS scores are widely used for migration, job applications, and professional certifications in English-speaking countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

A special IELTS test that assesses only speaking and listening skills. It’s used for UK spouse visas or settlement.
